What Do Dental Implants Feel Like After Treatment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Immediately after implant surgery, your mouth may feel sore, swollen or tender. The implant site can also feel different from the surrounding teeth. This is normal as your gums and jaw heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dentist may recommend soft foods and provide instructions for caring for the surgical area. Following these instructions can help support healing and reduce discomfort during the first several days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As healing progresses, most of the temporary soreness should gradually disappear. The implant itself does not have the same sensation as a natural tooth because the implant is secured directly into the jawbone rather than connected to the nerves inside a natural tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do Dental Implants Feel Like Real Teeth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the implant has fully healed and your permanent crown, bridge or denture is attached, it should feel much more like a natural tooth. Dental implants are designed to provide stability, allowing you to eat, speak and smile without the movement associated with some removable dental appliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may initially notice that the new tooth feels slightly different from your natural teeth. Your tongue may also take some time to get used to the shape and position of the restoration. With time, many people stop noticing the difference during everyday activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can You Feel the Implant Under Your Gums?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The titanium or other implant material is positioned within the jawbone and covered by gum tissue. Under normal circumstances, you should not feel the implant itself when you run your tongue over your gums. Instead, you interact primarily with the visible restoration placed on top of the implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you notice persistent pressure, discomfort, movement or an unusual sensation around an implant, contact your dentist. These symptoms may indicate an issue that needs to be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Eating with Dental Implants?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A major benefit of dental implants is their stability. Once your dentist determines that your implant and restoration are ready for normal use, you can generally eat a wide variety of foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may need to start with softer foods while your mouth heals. Your dental team will let you know when it is appropriate to gradually return to your normal diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
