Happy National Dental Hygiene Month! Since the most candy-filled holiday is rapidly approaching and the pre-holiday festivities are about to begin, there is no time like the present to get your smile in tip-top shape. After all, this is the time of year when the cases of tooth decay and cavities skyrocket. Fortunately, you can protect your smile by implementing the below dental hygiene tips from a dentist in Midland.

#1. Limit Your Candy Consumption

Halloween is a time for spooky décor, haunted houses, and fun costumes. But this creepy holiday wouldn’t be complete without candy! Fortunately, you can indulge guilt-free while simultaneously protecting your smile by simply limiting your consumption. Otherwise, the copious amounts of sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth, leading to tooth decay well beyond this “spooktacular” season.

#2. Always Brush Your Teeth Before Bed

When the days get shorter and the nights get colder, it can be tempting to jump under your covers and catch up on your favorite TV show. However, before you get comfortable, make sure to brush your teeth! Otherwise, the plaque, food particles, and bacteria are left on your teeth for 7+ hours throughout the night.

#3. Don’t Forget to Floss Daily

Did you know that brushing alone only cleans about 60% of each tooth’s surface? Plus, cavities between teeth is one of the most common dental conditions among Americans. So, if you are a part of the 30% of U.S. adults who don’t floss, there is no time like the present to start! After all, floss picks and water flossers make the task easier than ever.

#4. Drink Lots of Water

Water plays an essential role in your body functioning optimally, but it is equally as important for your oral health. In fact, sipping on water throughout the day helps rinse cavity-causing food particles and debris away. Therefore, it’s a good idea to always keep a glass of water close by!

#5. Visit Your Dentist Biannually

When it comes to your oral health, no one is a greater ally than your dentist. In addition to keeping your teeth and gums in pristine condition with routine cleanings, they can also detect small problems before they turn into large dental emergencies. So, if you are overdue for your routine appointment, make sure to schedule it right away!

In light of National Dental Hygiene Month, there is no time like the present to prioritize your oral care routine. Fortunately, you can do so by implementing the above tips!
